Stories in Motion
On Saturday night, April 7th at 8PM, an ensemble of performers directed by Nina Wise will present Stories in Motion, an evening of improvised theater, at Potrero Stage.
Corey Fisher describes Motion Theater like this: Motion Theater “is word-jazz composed on the spot with the whole body. We weave stories around themselves until their meanings congeal and explode. The work has a democratic appetite that eats everything: obsessions, conversations, dreams, history, childhood, romance, death. We explore the daily grind until it launches us into the unknown. No nets. No scripts. Only right now.”
Although the work is improvised, the performers’ style has been refined over months, and in some cases, years in studio under the keen-eyed directorship of Nina Wise. The rhythms are tight, the narratives moving, insightful and funny, and the physicality delightful. Audiences rarely believe that the work is truly unplanned, and many become inspired to try it out themselves. To that end, Nina offers workshops in Motion Theater throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
Nina Wise is known for her provocative performance works, which have been produced in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. Her works have earned seven Bay Area Critics Circle Awards and Nina has been awarded three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. She is the author of A Big New Free Happy Unusual Life: Self-Expression and Spiritual Practice for Those Who Have Time for Neither (Broadway Books, May 2002). She is the founder of Motion Theater®. She also teaches at Esalen Institute, Spirit Rock Meditation Center. More information at www.ninawise.com and www.motiontheater.org.
