Bread & Butter Theatre Presents THE NORTH POOL by Rajiv Joseph
Bread & Butter Theatre opens their 2019 season with a sharp, tightly-woven drama by a thrilling American playwright—The North Pool by Rajiv Joseph. As the Boston Globe states, “Joseph has a gift for penetrating to the depths of human nature. As he explores the question of guilt—in all its forms, for all its reasons—there’s barely a wasted word.”
In The North Pool, a high-school vice principal and a Middle Eastern–born transfer student engage in a politically and emotionally charged game of cat and mouse, with dangerous consequences.
Lana Palmer directs this tightly crafted play at the 99-seat Potrero Stage, featuring Bruce Avery as high school vice principal Dr. Danielson and Zaya Kolia as Khadim, a Middle Eastern-born transfer student.
The North Pool was awarded the Edgerton New American Play award and the Glickman Award for Best Bay Area World Premiere in its original staging at TheatreWorks in 2011.
Bread & Butter Theatre Company’s production of The North Pool is presented as part of PlayGround’s Potrero Stage Presenting Program.
Director Lana Palmer is a Canadian-born, San Francisco-based director, writer, sound designer and composer. She began her career as a camera assistant on feature films and TV series (Watchmen, Psych) in Canada, and as a Line Producer at the Banff Centre’s New Media Institute. She is also a sound designer and composer, with music used on over 100 shows airing nationally and internationally, and received a 2018 TBA Awards nomination for Original Music for Inferno Theatre’s Dracula.
In 2018 she directed John Logan’s Red for Bread & Butter Theatre Company, and upcoming directing work includes Middletown for Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, and The How & The Why for Dragon Theatre in Redwood City, CA.
She is an alumna of the UCLA Professional Programs in Screenwriting and Television Writing, the RIFF Talent Lab, and the Canada Games National Artist Program, and is a proud member of AEA, the Dramatists Guild and SAG-AFTRA.
Playwright, Rajiv Joseph is an American playwright and a 2010 Pulitzer Prize-finalist. is mother is Euroamerican of French and German ancestry and his father immigrated to the States from India. He attended Cleveland Heights High School and graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1996 with a B.A. in Creative Writing. His mixed-race background has given him what one critic has called a “fearlessness” about racial topics: “”Being mixed-race has always been a part of my identity. You are never fully one thing or the other. You always feel a little apart, a little bit of an outsider, even when you are with your own family. That’s an interesting perspective for looking at the world.”
His plays include Gruesome Playground Injuries, Animals Out of Paper, and Guards at the Taj. Joseph’s Pulitzer finalist play Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo was produced on Broadway (opening March 2011) with Robin Williams playing the titular character.
